There are about 4 different types of laser hair removal devices. The most important difference between these lasers is the wavelength they use. Wavelength has a great importance in the effectiveness of laser epilation; The absorption by melanin varies according to the wavelength of the laser used. Melanin is a pigment that gives the skin a brown hue. The melanin found in all layers of the skin is mostly concentrated around the hair follicle. Dark-skinned people have more melanin in their skin, and light-colored people have less.

Due to its structure, the applied laser energy is held by melanin and transfers its energy to melanin. The heat generated during this time can rise up to about 60 °C. This high degree of heat destroys both melanin and surrounding tissues. Since the adjacent tissue adjacent to the melanin is also a hair follicle, the hair follicle is thus destroyed. Laser epilation devices can be examined in 4 main groups according to their wavelengths:

  • Ruby laser (694 nm)
  • Alexandrite laser (755 nm)
  • Diode laser (810 nm)
  • Nd-Yag laser (1064 nm)
  • There are also devices that work with Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology, but these are not lasers.

Since the success of laser epilation treatment is directly related to the hair structure, hair thickness and skin color of the applied person, one type of device is not suitable for all people. Each laser will have different results depending on the wavelength.
